The Library

The Istituto Matteucci library is a major research resource for study of modern French and Italian art. Kept continuously up to date, it provides support for the preparation of degree theses, essays, reviews and other publications in the field. It is oriented chiefly towards the art and literature of the period, particularly the school of the Tuscan Macchiaioli.

Its more than 20.000 titles include critical and historical essays, monographs, reviews and periodicals, together with sales and exhibition catalogues.
Many of these publications are extremely rare and offer, therefore, an exceptional insight into the character of late 19th century exhibitions, especially those held annually at the Brera Academy in Milan and at the local exhibition societies (Società Promotrici) of other Italian cities, for which the Istituto possesses many of the original catalogues.
